Sphygmometers for the PBL rooms

Idea: A student suggested putting spygmometers in each of our PBL rooms in order to practcing taking BP’s.

Vanessa Cooper’s Response:
Due to health and safety regulations this is not possible. In addition, at a later stage we will be allowed to check-out sphygmometers in order to practice taking BP’s, and in this way cuffs can be washed between student uses.

Switching PBL times

Dr. Kippers’ and Vanessa Cooper’s Responses:

  • Dr. Kippers: Said that this simply is not possible.
  • Vanessa Cooper:We are expected to be in school from 8-6pm and we are entering a demanding profession, thus any complaints in this area demonstrate a lack of professionalism/dedication to the program/field.

Solution: I got a double “no” on this one. Ideas, suggestions, comments?

Professors should not give the solution to our PBL cases

Vanessa Coopr’s response:
This only happened once and it is near impossible to regulate this, especially with such a large number of professors that are lecturing us.

Regardless, she is still going to try to get the message across to professors and hopefully this will minimize the number of times this happens.

Getting the schedule earlier

Vanessa Cooper’s Response:
Due to the variable nature of the schedule there is no point in placing it up earlier. In addition it is only recently that a preview of the following week has been made available.

Solution: I will try to ask again along with reasons for why  having even a dodgey-schedule is better than none. IDEAS???

“Do not copy” written across sides

Response from Vanessa Cooper:

It is up to professors to do what they want with their own property/material, and any attempts to ask Dr. Leigh Ward to change his method would probably result in having no more slides, which is considerably less desirable than having unclear ones.

Solution: Up to you guys: I can try talking to him but it seems like it would be better to leave this issue alone.

Getting lecture slides earlier

Response from Vanessa Cooper

She sends reminders to professors in October before the year starts, 4 weeks and 2 weeks before the lecture is scheduled and even chases the professors up after they have already given the lecture. So this a near impossible task, and in addition professors are not under any obligation to work on a “student-based” timeline.

Missing lecture slides

Vanessa Cooper will ask Jenny Schafer for her slides on “Approach to history taking and introduction to CC” from Week 3

Computers in Room 6 & 16

Response from Vanessa Cooper about computers:

Room 6: She said your computer was working just fine. Is this true?

Room 16: You can’t upload stuff. She said the computers were made such that you cannot upload anything onto any computer. I will therefore leave a CD in your room with the student notes, histology slides etc.

Wireless connectivity on 5th floor

Vanessa Cooper’s response to wireless connectivity issue:

Each PBL room has many ports thus students are encouraged to get a cable.

As for wireless, each room should have it but the building was not made for wireless connectivity, i.e. the wireless issues are integral to the building and by consequence nothing can be done.

Course of Action: Mass complaint to IT people. Will need to organize this so we all call at the same time, so they do something about this issue. To be followed up.

Do you guys have any other ideas for this?
